Don’t Leave Kauai Without Sunset Drinks at This Spot

There are views, and then there are VIEWS. Wehina Terrace at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay falls firmly in the second category. Perched up on the hillside above Hanalei Bay, this open-air terrace bar and restaurant has arguably the most spectacular setting on the entire island…and that is saying a LOT on an island that looks like Kauai. It’s best known for its sushi and craft cocktails, but honestly? The views and the vibes are the real reason you come here.

Who This Spot Is Perfect For…

Here’s my strong opinion on this one: EVERYONE visiting Kauai’s north shore should make a point of getting here for sunset drinks. Even if you’re not staying at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (and it is a stunning hotel, for what it’s worth), you can absolutely come just for drinks and food, and you absolutely should.

This is the kind of place that’s perfect for a special evening out, a honeymoon night, or honestly just a regular Tuesday when you want to feel like you’re living your best life. It’s a great option if you’re staying anywhere on the north shore since it’s right there in Princeville, but even if you’re based further away on the south shore, the drive out is worth it. Come for sunset, stay for a couple of drinks, and just…take it all in. You really won’t regret it.

One thing to keep in mind though…this is not the spot if you’re looking for a full, sit-down dinner situation. The menu is more sushi, small bites and shareables. If you want a heartier meal, my suggestion is to come here first for sunset drinks and sushi, and then head over to the 1 Kitchen (also at the hotel) for a proper dinner. That combo makes for a pretty perfect evening.

And please, make a reservation. This isn’t a walk-up situation, especially during peak season on the north shore.

Extra Details…

Price-wise, you’re looking at splurge territory. This is the 1 Hotel after all, so come with that expectation set and you’ll have a great time. The sushi is the star of the food menu and it’s really good…fresh, beautifully presented, and exactly what you want to be eating while you’re watching the sun drop over Hanalei Bay. The small bites round things out nicely if you want to graze your way through the evening.

The drink menu is impressive and worth exploring beyond whatever your usual order is. The cocktails are creative and well done, and they feel like they belong in that setting.

But I’ll say it again…you come here for the setting. The food and drinks are great, but that view of Hanalei Bay at golden hour is the thing you’ll be talking about when you get home. Don’t miss it ; )

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.

It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
