The Best Seafood Deal on Maui Is at This Food Truck and I’ll Die on That Hill

I’ve eaten a LOT of fish tacos on Maui. It’s basically a hobby at this point. And I have a pretty strong opinion about where the best ones are…that would be South Maui Fish Co.
It’s a food truck. It’s tucked inside a slightly odd little courtyard in a shopping center in Kihei. And I genuinely think the fish rivals some of the best restaurants on the island. I’ll take questions at the end ; )
The whole thing is pretty simple. There’s a grill set up outside the truck, the fish gets cooked right in front of you, and the tacos are fresh and straightforward in the best possible way. No fuss, no frills, just really incredible fish. Best known for the fish tacos, obviously, but the quality of everything here starts with one thing… the fish itself.
Who This Is Perfect For…
This one is for the budget-conscious traveler who still refuses to compromise on quality. And honestly, that should be all of us because Maui is EXPENSIVE and finding a place where you can eat an incredible meal for around $25 instead of $60+ feels like a genuine victory. It’s also perfect if you’re staying anywhere on the south side of the island… Kihei, Wailea, that whole area. It makes for a great lunch stop, especially if you’ve been out at the beach all morning and you want something really satisfying without derailing your whole afternoon or your wallet. But they’re also open for dinner which is perfect for those days where you’ve spent hours playing in the sun at the beach and you want a good dinner but don’t want to fuss with a restaurant.
A Few Things to Know
The owner used to supply fish to some of the high-end restaurants on Maui before he started the truck. So when I say the quality rivals the fancy spots… that’s not just a food truck compliment. The fish is usually caught that morning, grilled right outside the truck, and the cuts are HEARTY. Like, nobody is skimping here. The ingredients are fresh and simple and they just let the fish do the talking, which is exactly the right call when the fish is this good.
Price-wise you’re looking at around $25 for a meal, which on Maui feels like a deal.
Now I do want to be upfront about one thing… there’s really not much atmosphere here. And I don’t mean that as a knock on it being a food truck because plenty of food trucks on Maui have great vibes. This one is just kind of tucked away in a nondescript little shopping center and there’s nothing particularly cute or quaint about the setting. You’re not going here for the ambiance.
But you’re going for the fish tacos and on that front it completely delivers. Sometimes the best meal of your trip comes from the most unexpected place and South Maui Fish Co. is pretty much the perfect example of that.
