This Retro-Cool Waikiki Stay Is a Stylish Hideaway That’s Perfect for Design Lovers
I just got back from a stay at The Laylow Waikiki, and I’m not being dramatic when I say I haven’t stopped talking about it since. If you’re the kind of traveler who picks hotels based on vibe as much as location (or let’s be honest… mostly vibe), this place is going to hit you right in your aesthetic-loving heart.
It’s retro. It’s warm. It’s very “vintage Hawaiiana meets mid-century cool.” And somehow it manages to feel both stylish and completely unpretentious. The second I walked into the lobby, I felt like I’d found a little design-forward hideaway tucked into the chaos of Waikiki. Not beachfront. Not a mega-resort. But cool in a way that makes you feel like you’re in on a secret.
So let’s break it down…here’s what it’s actually like to stay here, what makes it special, and what you should know before booking.
Staying at the Laylow in Waikiki
The Laylow is a boutique city hotel in Honolulu (on the island of Oahu) that’s part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, which basically means it has a curated, independent personality while still having the reliability of a big brand behind it. It’s right in the center of Waikiki on Kuhio Avenue…about two blocks from the beach.
No, it’s not oceanfront. And unless you’re on a very high floor with a generous interpretation of “ocean view,” you won’t be staring at the Pacific from your balcony. But you are incredibly close. I’m talking a five-ish walk to the sand.
Because of its location, everything is at your fingertips. Shopping? Everywhere. Restaurants? Endless. Bars, shave ice, coffee shops, and approximately twelve ABC Stores within eyesight. You absolutely do not need a car if you’re staying mostly in Waikiki.
Design-wise, this place leans hard into vintage Hawaiiana. Think rattan accents, palm prints, warm woods, breezy textiles, and more mid-century inspiration than a Palm Springs Airbnb…but done in a way that feels intentional, not gimmicky. It’s cozy, warm, and surprisingly peaceful considering how central it is.
It fully embraces being a city hotel…but with vacation energy. And honestly? I loved that about it.
Things I Love About The Laylow
1. The Design (Like… Obviously)
From the second you walk into the lobby, you know someone obsessed over every detail. The lighting is warm and flattering. The textures are layered. The furniture looks like it was sourced by someone who owns many coffee table books about design.
And that wallpaper behind the bed? The iconic floral moment you’ve probably seen on Instagram? It absolutely lives up to the hype. It’s bold but not overwhelming. Stylish but still relaxed.
If you appreciate staying somewhere that feels curated instead of cookie-cutter, this place delivers.
2. The Rooms Are Shockingly Spacious
Waikiki hotels are not famous for generous layouts. I’ve stayed in rooms here that felt like upgraded cruise ship cabins.
Not at The Laylow.
My room had two king beds (yes, two), tons of floor space, and a layout that didn’t make me feel like I had to shuffle sideways to get around. It was bright, airy, and thoughtfully decorated. No outdated carpet. No sad beige walls. Just clean lines and cool design touches.
It felt like a room you actually want to hang out in.
3. The Welcome Gift Basket
Every room gets a little welcome basket with branded flip-flops, refillable water bottles, snacks, and fun extras. It’s not extravagant, but it’s thoughtful.

There’s something about arriving somewhere and immediately feeling welcomed that sets the tone for your entire stay. It made it feel personal instead of transactional.
4. The Insta-Famous zDetails
The ukulele on the shelf? Not just decor. You can actually play it. (Whether your travel partner will appreciate that is another story.)
Little details like that make the space feel playful and unique. It’s clear they leaned into personality rather than going generic-luxury-safe.
5. Location, Location, Location
You can walk everywhere. The beach is right there. Shopping is right there. Late-night snacks are very right there.
If you’re someone who likes to wander without planning every single move, this location is perfect. It makes your trip feel spontaneous and easy.
6. The Value
It’s not a budget hotel. But for the level of design, comfort, and location? I genuinely think it’s one of the best values in Waikiki.
On my shortlist for this trip, it was easily the nicest option at its price point. You feel like you’re getting boutique personality without paying ultra-luxury beachfront prices.
7. The Chill-but-City-Hotel Energy
Some Waikiki properties try really hard to pretend they’re secluded tropical resorts… while being directly next to a Starbucks and a surf shop.
The Laylow doesn’t pretend. It owns the city-hotel identity — and then wraps it in a retro charm so it still feels vacation-y.
Things That Could Be Better About The Laylow
No hotel is perfect. So let’s be honest.
1. No Beachfront Views
If your dream is waking up to a full panoramic ocean view from your bed, this isn’t that. You can walk to the beach in minutes, but you won’t see it from most rooms.
For some travelers, that’s a dealbreaker.
2. It’s More “City Hotel” Than “Resort”
There are no sprawling tropical grounds. No oceanfront lounge chairs. No massive lagoon-style pool.
The pool area is stylish but small. It’s cute, not grand. If you’re expecting a full resort experience with tons of amenities, this will feel scaled down.
3. The Pool Gets Crowded
Because the pool deck isn’t huge, it fills up quickly — especially midday. If pool lounging is your main vacation goal, it’s going to feel busy.
4. Limited On-Site Amenities
There’s a restaurant, a bar, a pool, and coffee shop. But no spa. No extensive fitness center. No direct beach access.
If you want everything contained in one giant resort bubble, this might not check every box.
5. Street Noise (Depending on Your Room)
Waikiki is lively. Some rooms pick up city noise — buses, nightlife, general hustle. It wasn’t unbearable, but if you’re a super light sleeper, you’ll want to request a higher or quieter-facing room. Or bring a noise machine.
Overall
The Laylow is one of those hotels that just feels good. The design is gorgeous. The rooms are spacious. The location is unbeatable. And the vibe is stylish without being stiff.
It’s the kind of place you look forward to coming back to after a long beach day or dinner out. And that feeling matters.
You should stay here if:
- You love thoughtful design and curated aesthetics
- You want to be in the heart of Waikiki
- You appreciate boutique energy over mega-resort chaos
- You care about value but still want something special
- You like hotels with personality

You might consider staying elsewhere if:
- You need beachfront or guaranteed ocean views
- You want a full-service luxury resort with tons of amenities
- Your main plan is pool lounging all day
- You’re extremely sensitive to city noise
For me? I’d absolutely stay here again. It feels like a breath of…fresh tropical air… in the middle of Waikiki. Charming, stylish, and just retro enough to make it feel special.
If you’re a design lover looking for a cool hideaway instead of a cookie-cutter resort, this place is going to be your vibe.
