I Finally Stayed at That Pink Hotel in Hawaii, But I Didn’t Expect It to Be Like THIS

You know the one.

The bright pink hotel in every Waikiki photo. The one that looks like it belongs in a vintage postcard. The one people call “The Pink Palace of the Pacific.”

I finally stayed at The Royal Hawaiian, and I’ll be honest…I thought I knew exactly what I was getting.

Iconic. Historic. Pretty. Maybe a little old-school.

What I didn’t expect? How much personality this place has. And how different the experience feels depending on where you stay inside the property.

It’s glamorous without being stuffy. Historic without feeling outdated (mostly). And somehow right in the center of Waikiki… but still slightly removed from the chaos.

So here’s the full scoop on what it’s really like staying at Hawaii’s most iconic pink hotel.

Staying at the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki

The Royal Hawaiian opened in 1927 and is easily the most recognizable hotel in Waikiki…arguably in all of Hawaii. It’s often called “The Pink Palace of the Pacific,” and once you see it in person, you understand why.

The architecture is dramatic Spanish-Moorish style, painted in that unmistakable rosy hue. Arched walkways. Lush courtyards. Palm trees everywhere. It feels like stepping into another era…the glamorous, old-Hollywood-meets-Hawaii era.

It sits directly on Waikiki Beach, but interestingly, it’s tucked slightly back from Kalakaua Avenue behind the Royal Hawaiian Center. So while you’re technically in the heart of Waikiki, the property itself feels quieter than many of the neighboring mega resorts.

Recently voted “the most Instagrammable hotel in North America,” it absolutely lives up to that title. Every corner feels photogenic.

There are two main accommodation options:

  • The historic wing (original building)
  • The newer Mailani Tower (the renovated “luxury” tower)

And trust me…that distinction matters.

Things I Love About The Royal Hawaiian

Okay. There’s a reason this hotel has been iconic for nearly a century.

1. The Aesthetic Is Unreal

This place is a whole vibe.

The pink facade against the blue ocean. The courtyard framed by arches. The pink umbrellas lined up perfectly on the beach.

It feels timeless in a way that most Waikiki hotels just… don’t.

You feel like you’re staying somewhere with history. Somewhere that’s seen movie stars and royalty and decades of Hawaiian vacations.

And yes…if you care about aesthetics even a little bit, you will be very happy here.

2. The Location Is Sneakily Perfect

You are smack in the center of Waikiki. Walk outside and everything is there…shopping, restaurants, nightlife, beach activities.

But because the hotel is tucked slightly off the main strip, it doesn’t feel like you’re directly in the middle of the chaos.

That balance is hard to find in Waikiki.

3. Mailani Tower Is Worth It

If it’s in your budget, book the Mailani Tower. Just do it.

The rooms are newly renovated, modern, bright, and feel far more contemporary than the historic wing. And the ocean views? Incredible.

The historic wing has charm, but the Mailani Tower feels a lot nicer.

You also get extra perks in the Mailani Tower…better views, more updated bathrooms, and an overall elevated experience.

4. The Beach Setup Is Prime

The Royal Hawaiian sits on one of the best stretches of Waikiki Beach. The water here is typically calm and swimmable.

And those pink umbrellas? Iconic.

5. The Historic Charm

There’s something special about walking through a nearly 100-year-old hotel that still feels relevant.

The hallways. The courtyard. The grand staircases. It’s romantic in a way that’s hard to manufacture nowadays.

It doesn’t feel like a generic beachfront tower. It feels like a landmark.

Things That Could Be Better About The Royal Hawaiian

Okay. Let’s talk about the reality.

1. The Historic Wing Rooms Can Feel Dated

This is the biggest thing people mention in negative reviews…and it’s fair.

While the historic wing is charming, some rooms feel smaller and more outdated compared to modern luxury hotels.

Bathrooms especially can feel less updated.

2. You’re Paying for the Name

This is an iconic property…and pricing reflects that.

You’re absolutely paying a premium for the history, the brand, and the Instagram factor.

Is it worth it? That depends on what you value.

If you just want a nice beachfront room and don’t care about the legacy or aesthetics, there are other options in Waikiki that might feel like better value.

3. It Shares Amenities with the Sheraton

The Royal Hawaiian shares certain amenities with the neighboring Sheraton Waikiki, including pool access.

That’s not necessarily bad…but it means you’re not in a fully self-contained boutique experience.

If you’re expecting total exclusivity, this setup might feel less intimate.

4. It’s Still Waikiki

Even though it’s slightly tucked away, you’re still in Waikiki.

That means crowds on the beach. Tourists everywhere. Busy sidewalks.

If you’re craving secluded tropical serenity, this isn’t that.

It’s iconic city-meets-beach energy.

Overall

Staying at The Royal Hawaiian felt like checking something off a bucket list…but in a good way.

It’s glamorous. It’s historic. It’s ridiculously photogenic. And it sits in one of the best spots in Waikiki.

But your experience will heavily depend on where you stay within the hotel.

You should stay here if:

  • You love iconic, historic hotels
  • Aesthetic matters to you
  • You want to be in the heart of Waikiki
  • You’re willing to splurge for the Mailani Tower
  • You appreciate a blend of old-world charm and modern comfort

You might consider staying elsewhere if:

  • You want ultra-modern luxury throughout
  • You’re looking for a quiet, secluded resort
  • You don’t care about hotel history or ambiance
  • You’re focused purely on price-to-room-value ratio

For me? I’m so glad I finally stayed here.

The Pink Palace lives up to the hype…but only if you understand what you’re booking. It’s not a sleek contemporary tower. It’s not a boutique hideaway.

It’s an icon.

And if you lean into that…especially from a freshly renovated Mailani Tower room with that unreal ocean view…it’s actually pretty magical.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
