Hollywood Loves This Beach in Hawaii (They’ve Filmed Dozens of Movies Here)
When Hollywood needs a beach backdrop that almost looks too perfect to be real…there’s one place they go.
That’s Kawela Bay on Oahu’s North Shore.
If you’ve ever watched Lost, Hawaii Five-O, or Magnum P.I. and found yourself thinking “WHERE is that?” There’s a good chance that this was the place.
And here’s the thing that gets me….most visitors to Oahu have absolutely no idea this place exists.
Kawela Bay on Oahu’s North Shore
Kawela Bay sits on the north shore of Oahu, tucked just past the famous Turtle Bay resort area and a short drive from the big name North Shore spots like Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay.
It’s a wide, curved bay with calm turquoise water, a stretch of soft sand, and a canopy of ironwood and banyan trees that hang right over the shoreline giving it this incredible, lush, cinematic quality (which, as we’ve established, Hollywood has definitely noticed).
Getting here requires a short walk. There’s no big parking lot or beach access sign pointing you in the right direction. You park off Kamehameha Highway and follow a path through the trees to reach the beach. It’s not hard to get to, but it’s just enough of a barrier that most people don’t bother, which honestly works out great for those of us who do.
If you happen to be staying at the Ritz Carlton Oahu Turtle Bay, you actually have access to a really lovely network of trails that connect the resort directly to Kawela Bay, which makes it incredibly easy and scenic to get here on foot or bike. It’s one of the best perks of staying there in my opinion.
Why You’ll Love This…
SO many reasons. Let me break it down.
It’s one of the most gorgeous beaches in Hawaii and almost nobody goes there. I don’t say that lightly because Hawaii has a LOT of competition in the gorgeous beach department. But Kawela Bay has this quality that’s hard to put into words…it feels wild and untouched and secret all at the same time. While Waimea Bay a few miles down the road is packed with locals and tourists jumping off the famous rock, Kawela Bay is just…quiet. It consistently gets overlooked and I genuinely don’t understand why.
The water is usually calm. The North Shore is famous for its massive winter surf, and a lot of those beaches are NOT swimming beaches when the swells roll in. Kawela Bay is more sheltered than its neighbors though, so the water tends to stay relativ ely calm even when other spots are going off. It’s a much more relaxed, swimmable situation which is a big deal if you’re coming here to actually get in the water and not just watch surfers.
Turtles. Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected (it’s actually a federal offense to touch them, just so you know) and spotting one in the wild never ever gets old. Kawela Bay is one of those spots where turtle sightings are pretty common, both in the water and sometimes resting on the sand. Just keep your distance and enjoy the moment.
The setting feels like a movie set because it literally is one. Okay so let’s get into the fun part. The list of productions filmed at Kawela Bay is honestly kind of staggering. On the movie side there’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Soul Surfer, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Snatched. On the TV side, Lost filmed here, as did Hawaii Five-O, Magnum P.I., and even The Hills. So if you’ve ever watched any of those and thought the scenery looked absolutely unreal…now you know where to go find it.
It’s a great excuse to explore the North Shore beyond the usual stops. Most visitors to the North Shore hit Haleiwa, Waimea Bay, and Sunset Beach and call it a day. And those are all great! But if you’re spending a day up here anyway, adding a stop at Kawela Bay is so easy and so worth it. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you found something most tourists completely miss…because you did.
The trees make it feel like a different world. One of the things I love most about Kawela Bay is that the ironwood trees come right down to the water’s edge in some spots. It creates this shady, cool, slightly mysterious canopy situation that makes the whole beach feel lush and dramatic in the best way. It photographs beautifully and it just has this energy that you don’t get at your typical wide open resort beach. It feels more like a hidden lagoon than a public beach.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
There are no facilities here. No bathrooms, no food trucks, no beach chairs for rent. Pack everything you need and pack out everything you bring. The beach has stayed this pristine because people treat it well so please return the favor.
Go early if you can. Even though this isn’t a super crowded spot, mornings are always the best time on any North Shore beach. The light is gorgeous, the water is glassy, and you’ll likely have the place nearly to yourself.
And honestly? Even if you’d never heard of a single one of those movies or TV shows, Kawela Bay would still be worth your time. It’s just a genuinely special place. The Hollywood connection is a fun bonus…but the beach sells itself.
