The 100 Year Old Maui Bakery That Locals Still Line Up For Every Morning

Let’s talk about T. Komoda Store and Bakery because this place is a legit Maui institution and I don’t use that word lightly.

We’re talking OVER A HUNDRED YEARS of the same family running this little bakery in Makawao. Like, think about everything that’s changed on Maui in that time…and Komoda’s just keeps doing its thing. The vibe here is exactly what you’d want from a place with that kind of history. It’s small, it’s a little worn in (in the best way), and it feels like walking into a time capsule of old school upcountry Maui. No frills, no fuss, just really good baked goods that people have been driving up the mountain for since forever.

They’re most famous for their stick donuts (basically a Hawaii style long john, and yes, they’re incredible), but honestly good luck narrowing your order down to just that. The bakery case is FULL of options and I always end up leaving with way more than I planned on.

This post may contain some affiliate links, which means I’ll make a little money on anything you choose to purchase. But of course, I only recommend my absolute favorites to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that make HulaLand possible.

Who This Spot Is Perfect For…

This is your move if you’re doing the Haleakala sunrise thing. Seriously, it’s basically a rite of passage at this point… watch the sunrise, drive back down the mountain, and reward yourself with donuts at Komoda’s. The timing works out perfectly since they open early, which is exactly what you need after being up at 3am.

It’s also just a great stop if you’re spending a morning upcountry in general, whether you’re heading to a lavender farm, a winery, or just poking around cute little Makawao town. This isn’t a sit down, order at your leisure kind of place…it’s quick, it’s budget friendly, and it’s the kind of spot where you grab your goodies and either eat in the car or find a bench outside.

And honestly? It just feels like a very local Maui thing to do. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’re getting a real taste of the island, not just the tourist version of it.

Side Note: If you’re looking for a rental car for your trip, I LOVE Discount Hawaii Car Rentals. They’re seriously the only company I ever use. They’ll give you the very best prices, you don’t have to reserve with a credit card or pay until you show up, you can cancel and re-book anytime if you find a better rate, and they usually have a special that adds additional drivers for no fee. It’s a no brainer. Click here to check rates for your trip.

Extra Details

Prices are super reasonable, we’re talking a couple bucks per item, so you can go a little crazy with your order without feeling guilty about it. Obviously get the stick donuts, that’s non negotiable. But don’t sleep on whatever else looks good in the case that day either… it all tends to be worth it.

Here’s the big thing though…they open early and they sell out early. Like, don’t roll up at 10am expecting a full case. If you want the good stuff (especially those donuts), you need to get there sooner rather than later, which honestly lines up perfectly with the whole post sunrise plan.

One more tip… once you’ve got your bakery haul secured, head down the street to Espresso Mafia for coffee. It’s the perfect little one two punch for an upcountry Maui morning, and honestly one of my favorite combos on the whole island.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.

It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
