The Coffee Shop on Kauai You Probably Don’t Know About (But Should)
When most people think about what to do on Kauai, coffee shops are probably pretty low on the list. You’re there for the Na Pali Coast and the beaches and the shave ice, right? But hear me out, because Java Kai deserves a spot on your radar and I’m a little surprised it doesn’t come up more when people talk about their favorite spots on the island.
Java Kai is a local Kauai coffee shop that’s best known for doing really good coffee…like, REALLY good coffee. But it’s way more than just a place to grab a quick cup. The vibe is casual but really cute, the food is great, and the whole experience just feels very Kauai in the best possible way.
Who This Is Perfect For…
Honestly? Pretty much anyone. But especially if you’re a morning person who wants to start the day with something better than whatever your hotel lobby is offering. It’s a great spot if you’re already planning to drive across the island and need a reason to stop, or if you’re doing any exploring on the east or south side and want a proper breakfast or lunch before you head out. It’s casual enough that you can show up in your beach cover-up, but the food is good enough that it actually feels like a little event. And if you’re someone who needs a solid cup of coffee to function as a human being…this is your place.
Two Locations, But I Have a Favorite
There are two Java Kai locations on Kauai. The one in Kapaa is super convenient if you’re making the drive across the island or staying on the east side, and it’s worth a stop. But MY favorite is the Koloa location and I don’t think it’s even close.
The Koloa spot just feels more like a destination. There’s a lot of outdoor seating, the design and aesthetic are really lovely, and it has a whole different energy than a quick pit stop situation. And Koloa itself is such a cute little town. You could easily spend an hour or two just wandering around after your coffee, which to me is the ideal vacation morning ; )
What to Order
The coffee is the obvious starting point and you genuinely cannot go wrong. But don’t overlook the food because the avocado toast is SO good, the sandwiches are solid, and the dessert case… oh, the dessert case. No regrets.
So next time you’re on Kauai and you want a morning that feels a little special without being a whole production…Java Kai.
I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.
And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.
This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.
Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.
So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.
I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.
It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
