This Is the Best “Under the Radar” Resort on Maui
When people talk about Maui resorts, the “big names” get tossed around a lot: Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, Andaz, Ritz Carlton. Big, flashy, undeniably luxurious… and also eye-wateringly expensive. So where does the Wailea Beach Resort fit in?
After staying here multiple times (most recently after they’ve officially completed their multi year renovation), I’ve got thoughts. Spoiler: it’s not perfect, but it might be the best bang-for-your-buck “luxury-ish” resort on the island, especially if you care about location, pools, amenities, and value more than over the top service.
Staying at the Wailea Beach Resort Marriott

The Wailea Beach Resort is a Marriott property located in Wailea on the south side of Maui.
Wailea may not be the “real Maui,” but it does “resort life” better than anywhere else in Hawaii.
It’s by far the most luxe part of the island with all of the vacation amenities you could ever want but with fewer crowds than places on the west side.
The resort itself sits right on the ocean, wedged perfectly between Wailea Beach to the south and Ulua Beach to the north. That puts it in prime real estate, with the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea just down the path and the Andaz up the way. The Shops at Wailea (with restaurants, boutiques, an ABC Store, and a market) are an easy walk, which is a huge plus.
This is a large, open-air resort that’s laid out long and skinny along the coastline, which means a ton of ocean views.
It’s best known for its pools (plural, and then some), its modern, Insta-friendly vibe, and the fact that it’s one of the most popular Marriott Bonvoy redemptions in the world.
Things I Love About the Wailea Beach Resort
The pools are elite (and very ocean-forward).
If you judge resorts by their pools, this place absolutely crushes it. There are multiple oceanfront infinity pools, including a massive adults-only infinity pool with cabanas that jut out into the pool itself. And the terraced seating is genius…you’re not stuck staring at the back of someone’s lounge chair all day.
Then there are the Opi Pools. The lower-level infinity pool has a connecting hot tub and uninterrupted ocean views, and it somehow flies under the radar compared to the main adults pool. It’s quieter, calmer, and feels like a little secret once you find it.
Plus there’s an entire pool area that caters to families with two of the biggest waterslides on Maui plus plenty of small slides and a zero entry splash pad like area for little kids.
The Olakino Spa Pool is a total sleeper hit.
This is currently MY FAVORITE THING ON MAUI.
The Olakino Wellness Experience is an adults-only pool that offers a full day spa like experience with the best views on the island. There’s a fee for the day and you’ll need to reserve it in advance, but I would choose to spend the day here over getting a spa treatment or renting a cabana.
Reserving a spot at Olakino gets you a calm, elevated experience with gorgeous views and way fewer people for the entire day. It’s one of the best perks of staying here and doesn’t get nearly enough hype.
Incredible use of oceanfront space.
This is where the Wailea Beach Resort really separates itself. The property stretches along the coast, which means ocean views from tons of different vantage points—pools, walking paths, lounge areas, the lobby, and even random corners of the resort.
You’re constantly seeing the water, not just trekking toward it once a day.
Two beaches, not zero.
Despite what you might read online, this resort absolutely has beach access—actually, two of them. Wailea Beach (with chair and umbrella service) is just a few minutes’ walk from the south end of the property. Ulua Beach is just as close on the north side and connects to even longer walkable beaches. It’s a win-win setup.
I’ve had to walk further from my room at the Grand Wailea to get to Wailea Beach (the resort is ON Wailea Beach) than from the Wailea Beach Resort.
Best bang-for-your-buck “luxury” resort on Maui.
This is the big one. Compared to its neighbors, the Wailea Beach Resort is often significantly cheaper while still delivering a large percentage of the experience. It’s not the most luxurious resort in Wailea…but it might be the best value, especially if you’re using Marriott Bonvoy points or earning them on a paid stay.
Things That Could Be Better
The rooms are solid, but not special (compared to other resorts in the area)
In the past, I’ve been pretty critical of the rooms here. But I think they’ve finally gotten everything renovated and they are MUCH better than they used to be. Not as stylish as the Fairmont Kea Lani and not as luxurious as the Four Seasons, but they’re pretty solid and large.
The layout is confusing at first.
Getting from the lobby to your room can feel like solving a small maze, especially on arrival day. Multiple elevators, staircases, and pathways mean you’ll want to let the bellman handle your luggage. You’ll get the hang of it eventually, but the first impression can be a little chaotic.
Service is good, not exceptional.
The staff is friendly and helpful, but this isn’t Four Seasons-level service. If you need something, you may need to seek it out rather than having it proactively offered. Totally fine for most people—just something to calibrate expectations around.
Dining is hit or miss.
Some options are solid, especially the casual spots like Whale’s Tale and KAPA. But I think Humble Market Kitchen is just “okay” (especially for the price), and the breakfast buffet is particularly underwhelming unless it’s included in your rate. The good news is that Wailea has fantastic dining nearby, so you’re not stuck.
Overall: Who This Resort Is (and Isn’t) For
It’s not the most luxurious resort in Wailea, and it’s not trying to be. What it is is a beautiful, well-located, amenity-packed resort that delivers serious value…especially by Maui standards.
You should absolutely stay here if:
- You want the best bang-for-your-buck luxury resort on Maui
- You love ocean views, infinity pools, and outdoor resort vibes
- You’re a Marriott Bonvoy member with points or status
- You’re traveling with older kids or teens
- You want to be walkable to shops and restaurants
You might consider staying elsewhere if:
- You care deeply about high-end room finishes and spa-like bathrooms
- You want ultra-polished, anticipatory service
- You’re comparing it head-to-head on price with the Four Seasons or Andaz
So… is the Wailea Beach Resort the best under-the-radar resort on Maui? I’d say yes—with an asterisk. It’s not under the radar because it’s unknown. It’s under the radar because it quietly delivers way more than you’d expect for the price, especially in a place where prices are otherwise completely unhinged.
If a stay here is on the table, you’re doing just fine. And if you’re the kind of person who loves maximizing value without sacrificing amenities? You’ll love it.
I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.
And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.
This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.
Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.
So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.
