Planning a Special Dinner on Maui? This Spot Should Be on Your List

When people ask me where to go for a special occasion dinner on Maui, two places come to mind immediately: Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s Kapalua. And honestly, it’s not even a close call after that. These two are just in a different category than everything else on the island, and if you have a birthday, anniversary, honeymoon dinner, or just a night where you want to go all out…Merriman’s absolutely needs to be in the conversation.

The setting alone is worth making a reservation for. Merriman’s sits right on the water overlooking Kapalua Bay, which is one of the most beautiful little bays on the entire island. But what I really love about Merriman’s is that despite how stunning it all is, it never feels stuffy or overly formal. The vibe is warm, lively, a little bit festive…they like to say it feels like a party every night and that’s actually a pretty accurate description.

Who This Restaurant Is Perfect For…

This is your spot if you’re looking for that one really memorable dinner on Maui. Honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, last night of the trip blowout…Merriman’s delivers on all of it. It’s also perfect if you’re staying anywhere on the west side of Maui, Ka’anapali, Napili, Kapalua, since it’s right there and incredibly convenient without having to drive across the island.

But here’s something I love about Merriman’s that a lot of people don’t know: if you’re not up for a full sit-down dinner, the lanai seating is first come first serve. You can walk up, grab a spot outside, and order from the full drink menu plus their pupu menu which is honestly pretty substantial. It’s a great way to experience Merriman’s at a slightly more casual pace and a little easier on the wallet. Watching the sun go down over Kapalua Bay with a mai tai in hand from that lanai is one of my favorite things to do on Maui, full stop.

Extra Details

The menu is Hawaiian fusion with a serious farm to table commitment…locally sourced ingredients, fresh fish, beautifully executed dishes that feel both elevated and approachable at the same time. Everything I’ve had here has been really good but the fresh catch is always a safe bet.

And the mai tais. PLEASE order the mai tais. Merriman’s Kapalua is connected to Monkeypod Kitchen and they serve the same famous Monkeypod mai tai with the lilikoi foam on top…which in my completely non-negotiable opinion is the best mai tai in Hawaii. Starting dinner with one of those while looking out at Kapalua Bay is just about as good as it gets on Maui.

Pricing is on the higher end, right up there with Mama’s, but for a special occasion with one of the most beautiful views in Hawaii, it’s absolutely worth every dollar.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
