Skip the Spa on Maui: Do This Instead
Picture this…
You’re horizontal in a cushioned lounge chair at the edge of an infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the West Maui Mountains.
Someone just materialized at your chair with a little bite of something delicious and a refill of your drink without you asking. There’s live music drifting through the palm trees. You’re next up for a mini scalp massage.
That’s the Olakino Wellness Experience at the Wailea Beach Resort on Maui, and yes…it costs extra.
Is it worth it? Let’s talk about it.
So What IS the Olakino Wellness Experience?
First, a little background. The Wailea Beach Resort is one of the big resorts in Wailea, and it’s got a LOT going on in the pool department…four distinct pool areas spread across 22 tropical acres, including a waterslide complex, a main family pool, and the stunning adults-only infinity pool with those iconic overwater cabanas.
But tucked within the property, gated and somewhat hidden from the rest of the resort chaos, is Olakino…a completely separate adults-only wellness sanctuary that opened in 2023. The name itself is Hawaiian: “ola” means life and health, and “kino” means body. Together, olakino refers to the state of health and vitality of the body. It’s a fitting name for what they’ve created here.
This is NOT just a pool with some extra amenities. Olakino is billed as a first-of-its-kind experience on Maui…an “exclusive adults-only wellness sanctuary that combines culinary refreshments and guided wellness experiences in a private poolside setting.” Fancy.
Think of it as the relaxing bit of the day spa experience, but it takes place poolside with a view…and you get to stay ALL DAY LONG.
The experience runs from 8AM to 4PM, and the space is intentionally limited — only a small number of guests are admitted each day, which is a big part of what makes it feel so exclusive.
What’s included? Here’s the breakdown of what comes with your reservation:
Every day includes mini massages, culinary bites (smoothies, etc), frozen eye masks and chilled lavender towels, and a champagne toast at the end of the day.
On the weekends, they do a sound bath experience (I haven’t done that one yet).
Plus there’s merch (a little bag of branded goodies) and sunscreen to use.
But one of the stand outs is the service. Dedicated staff (called Po’e Mālama — translated as “one who takes care”) are assigned to take care of you throughout the day.
This is not a flag-down-a-server-when-you-need-something situation. These folks are ATTENTIVE and proactive, and THAT is what really elevates the whole thing.
There’s also a full food and drink menu available throughout the day, with fresh island flavors and health-forward culinary options, plus chef-curated additions like wagyu skewers and locally sourced farm-fresh salad bowls available to order.
The pool itself is a saline infinity pool (much gentler on eyes and skin than a heavily chlorinated pool…a nice touch for a WELLNESS experience) with in-water chaise loungers where you can just…float. There’s also a hot tub that could probably fit about 20 people.
How to Book: Olakino is reservation-only and books up — don’t wait until you get to the resort. If you’re a resort guest, you can book here. If you’re not, you can usually book through ResortPass (more on that later).
Which Seats Are the Best to Reserve
You’ll pick your exact chairs from a map when you reserve. Chair sets 3-9 have the best views with set 5 being, I think, the best seats in the house.
The chairs on either end of the pool have the worst views (sets 1 and 12).
There are five sets of chairs on the second line (sets 13-17).
And then there are three sets of daybeds ($700/set) and two cabanas situated on the back wall ($1200behind the chairs, but honestly I don’t think I would book those. There’s no extra benefit (the chairs are reserved anyways) and you’ll have an obstructed view.
Also, they’re quite a bit more money.
SO…Is It Worth the Money? Let’s Do the Math.
Okay, here’s where I’m going to make the case that spending the day at Olakino is actually a really good value.
If you’re staying at Wailea Beach Resort (an in house guest), lounge chairs start at $200/person. That’s for an EIGHT hour experience.
Now let’s compare that to the alternatives.
Compared to a spa treatment: The Wailea Beach Resort’s own Mandara Spa, charges $210 to $225 for a 60-minute massage, depending on the treatment. And honestly, that’s the low end of pricing for spa treatments on Maui.
For roughly that same price, Olakino gives you EIGHT hours in a stunning, private outdoor setting with live music, good service, a mini massage, little treats and the option to order extra food and drinks. And you don’t have to hit the pool deck at 7AM to reserve the best chairs ; )
Compared to a cabana rental: Most cabana rentals in Wailea start at about $600/day. And honestly, they’re usually not even in the best spots around the pools.
For two people, it’s actually cheaper to do the full experience here (in a set of lounge chairs) than doing a cabana rental at one of the main pools.
The value proposition at Olakino starts looking even stronger.
Who is this PERFECT for:
- Honeymooners or couples celebrating something…this is romantic without being over the top about it
- People who find the spa boring but still want a real treat
- Anyone who wants a “do nothing” day that still feels special
- Marriott Bonvoy members — the resort offers exclusive member pricing, so check that before you book

Who might want to skip it:
- Budget-conscious travelers…this is a splurge and there’s no getting around that
- People who like to be active and on the go — Olakino is specifically designed for you to STAY PUT and do very little
- Anyone who prefers a lively, social pool scene…this is peaceful and quiet by design
The Verdict
Look, here’s the honest truth…
The Olakino Wellness Experience is the kind of thing that sounds REALLY indulgent (and it is). But if you’re looking for a luxury experience…a day full of pampering and “good vibes”…the math actually makes sense.
For $200 per person, considering everything that’s included and how rare it is to find a poolside experience this thoughtfully designed anywhere in Hawaii, I think it’s legitimately one of the best ways you can spend a “slow day” on Maui.
Book it early. It fills up.
