I Tried the Most Famous Shrimp Trucks in Hawaii…Here’s How They Rank

In Hawaii, shrimp trucks are like pizza places in New York…honestly, they’re all fairly similar…but people have STRONG opinions about their personal favorites.

And after spending a few very happy (and very garlicky) days cruising Oahu’s North Shore, I get it now.

I pulled over at the big names, waited in some long lines, skipped a few others, and basically turned myself into 90% butter and shrimp. Totally worth it. If you’re driving up from Honolulu and wondering which trucks are actually worth your time (and appetite), here’s how I’d rank them.

#1: Kahuku Famous Shrimp

This is my personal favorite…no contest.

First off, it doesn’t have the same insane lines as some of the more hyped spots, which already puts it ahead in my book. But the real reason it takes the top spot? The coconut shrimp.

I wasn’t even planning to order it at first, but I’m so glad I did. Crispy, slightly sweet, and still super juicy inside…it’s a nice switch-up from the classic garlic butter situation (which they also do really well, by the way).

If I could only go back to one shrimp truck, it’d be this one.

#2: Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck

Okay, let’s talk about the legend.

Yes, it’s the most famous shrimp truck on the North Shore. Yes, the line can be long. And yes… it really is that good.

I went in slightly skeptical because anything this hyped usually disappoints a little. But nope…Giovanni’s delivers. The shrimp are plump, the garlic sauce is rich (borderline excessive in the best way), and the whole plate just hits.

Even though it’s not my #1, I totally understand why people swear by it. If it’s your first time on the North Shore, you kind of have to try it.

#3: Jenny’s Shrimp Truck

Jenny’s was a really solid surprise.

It doesn’t get quite the same level of attention as Giovanni’s, but honestly? It holds its own. The shrimp were flavorful, the portions were generous, and the wait wasn’t nearly as intense.

If Giovanni’s feels like the main event, Jenny’s feels like the cool under-the-radar spot that locals might quietly prefer.

It’s not flashy, but it’s consistently good…which, when you’re shrimp-truck hopping, is exactly what you want.

Honorable Mentions (Because I Couldn’t Stop Eating)

I didn’t rank these, but they’re absolutely worth checking out if you have the time (and stomach space):

Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp – Known for super fresh prawns and a slightly different flavor profile. A great alternative if you want something less buttery.

Big Wave Shrimp Truck – A little more variety on the menu and big portions. Good stop if you’re extra hungry.

Amy’s Shrimp and Poke Shack – Perfect if you want to mix it up with poke alongside your shrimp.

Final Thoughts

Here’s the thing: you really can’t go wrong.

Most of these trucks are working with the same basic formula…fresh shrimp, tons of garlic, rice on the side…and doing it well. The differences are subtle, but they’re just enough to spark those strong opinions I was talking about.

If you’re short on time, I’d say hit Kahuku Famous Shrimp for the overall experience and Giovanni’s for the classic. If you’ve got more time? Make a day of it and try a few.

Just maybe pace yourself better than I did.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.
