I Found a Retro Hawaiian Hotel With the Most Beautiful Beach & MANTA RAYS
Picture this: a retro Hawaiian hotel perched above what might be the most beautiful beach in Hawaii… and at night, giant manta rays gliding through the water right in front of the hotel. Not from a boat. Not on some crowded tour. Just… right there.
That’s the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on Hawaii’s Big Island
And honestly? I’m a little obsessed.
I’ve stayed at a lot of the top resorts in Hawaii, so it takes something pretty special to stand out. But this place hit me differently. It feels like stepping into a different era…like old Hawaii…but without giving up any modern comforts.
It’s that rare mix of nostalgic and luxurious, slightly quirky but incredibly well done. And then there’s the beach. And the manta rays. I mean… come on.
After my last trip, I left already planning how I’d come back.
Staying at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
***All the pictures in this post are from just before they started a major renovation.
The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel sits on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, tucked into Kauna’oa Bay. It originally opened in 1965, developed by Laurance Rockefeller, and it was actually the first resort built on the island.
And you can feel that history the second you arrive.
The hotel is built into a bluff overlooking the beach, so as you walk through the property, everything opens up to this sweeping view of white sand and perfectly calm, turquoise water. It’s not overly flashy or ultra-modern like some newer resorts…it leans into its mid-century roots in a way that feels intentional.
But don’t let the “retro” label fool you. The property just went through a full renovation. All the guest rooms have been updated, there’s a brand new infinity pool (which looks incredible), and they’ve added a new spa area as well.
Still, the soul of the place hasn’t changed. And that’s kind of the magic.
Things I Love About Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
1. The Beach Is Unreal
I don’t say this lightly: I think Kauna’oa Beach is the best beach on the Big Island.
The sand is soft and white (which is rare on the Big Island), the water is calm, and the bay is naturally protected, so it feels more like a giant swimming pool than the open ocean. In the mornings, it’s glassy and clear…perfect for snorkeling or just floating around for hours.
And the way the hotel is positioned above it? Stunning. You get this elevated view that makes the whole place feel cinematic.
2. The Manta Rays (This Is the Showstopper)
This is what really sets the hotel apart.
At night, manta rays gather just offshore, attracted by lights in the water. Most people have to book a boat tour and swim in the ocean in the dark to see them (which, let’s be honest, isn’t for everyone).
But here? You can just walk down to the viewing area and watch them glide through the water.
It’s surreal. Peaceful. Kind of mesmerizing. I stood there way longer than I planned to.
They also offer guided snorkeling tours if you want to get in the water, but even just watching from above is unforgettable.
3. Vintage Hawaiian Vibes (Done Right)
There’s something about this place that just feels… authentic.
It doesn’t try too hard. It’s not overly polished in that sterile, luxury-resort way. Instead, it leans into its history…with open-air spaces, clean mid-century lines, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels very “old Hawaii.”
4. Breakfast at Manta
This became my daily ritual.
Sitting at Manta in the morning, coffee in hand, looking out over the bay while the water sparkles in the early light…it’s one of those moments that just sticks with you.
The food is great, but honestly, it’s the setting that makes it.
5. The Setting Is Next-Level
I’ve been to a lot of beautiful resorts, but this one is easily in my top two when it comes to location.
Rockefeller reportedly spent months scouting the islands to find the perfect spot…and yeah, he absolutely nailed it.
It’s secluded without feeling isolated, dramatic without being overwhelming, and just… perfectly placed.
6. Activities Without the Chaos
You’ve got access to one of the top-rated golf courses in the world, plus the Seaside Tennis Club…which is seriously impressive.
I took both a tennis lesson and a pickleball lesson, and playing while hearing waves crash in the background? Not a bad way to spend a morning.
There’s also snorkeling tours directly from the beach, which makes everything feel super accessible.
7. Marriott Bonvoy Redemption Potential
If you’re into points, this is a big one.
The hotel is part of Marriott Bonvoy, which means you can redeem points…and if you book four nights, you get the fifth night free. For a property like this, that’s a pretty solid deal.
Things That Could Be Better
1. The Room Layout Is… Interesting
The rooms are big…like, really big…but the layout feels a bit quirky.
The bedroom itself is only large enough for two double beds (a throwback to when the hotel was built), but then you’ve got this massive walk-in closet, huge double vanities, and a spacious wet room.
It’s not bad, just… unusual.
2. The Pool (At Least Before the Renovation)
Before the recent updates, the pool area was definitely one of the weaker points.
It was small and felt a bit dated, and getting a chair during peak season could be a challenge. They’ve updated it a bit during the renovation and moved the hot tub so it has ocean views, which is a great upgrade.
Also, the new infinity pool they’ve added looks like a major upgrade, and I can’t wait to return and check that out.
3. It’s Not Ultra-Modern Luxury
If you’re expecting something like a brand-new, ultra-sleek, super high-design resort, this might not fully hit that mark.
Even with renovations, the property still leans into its vintage identity. Personally, I love that…but I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s vibe.
4. Limited “Buzz”
This isn’t a high-energy, nightlife-heavy kind of place. It’s quiet, relaxed…a little more low-key. If you’re looking for a scene, you might find it a bit too mellow.
Overall
The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel feels like a love letter to classic Hawaii.
It has one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. An unforgettable manta ray experience. A setting that genuinely competes with the best in the islands. And that rare mid-century authenticity that’s hard to replicate.
Yes, parts of it feel dated. Yes, the pool situation isn’t on par with the modern mega-resorts.
But the beach and the setting completely outweigh those things for me.
You should stay here if:
- You love beautiful beaches (like, really beautiful beaches)
- You’re into unique, memorable experiences (hello, manta rays)
- You appreciate a mix of history and luxury
- You want a peaceful, scenic, slightly nostalgic Hawaiian vibe
- You’re into golf, tennis, or just being outdoors in a stunning setting
You might consider staying elsewhere if:
- You want ultra-modern, cutting-edge design everywhere
- You’re looking for a lively nightlife or social scene
- You prioritize big pool complexes over beach access
For me? This place feels special. Timeless. A little different in the best way.
And with the recent renovations…including updated rooms, a new infinity pool, and a new spa…I have a feeling it’s only getting better.
I already know I’ll be back.
