This Is the Most Iconic Spot for Sunset Drinks & Hula Dancing in Hawaii

If there’s one spot in all of Hawaii that feels like stepping into a different era…it’s House Without a Key at the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki.

Named after a 1925 Charlie Chan mystery novel set in Honolulu, this open-air restaurant and bar is basically the gold standard for that romantic, old Hawaii feeling that’s getting harder and harder to find the more Waikiki develops.

It’s best known for its sunset entertainment, live Hawaiian music, and hula dancing every single evening, and honestly it’s one of those experiences that belongs on every Hawaii bucket list.

Who This Spot Is Perfect For…

This is your spot if you’re looking for a really special happy hour or a leisurely dinner with some serious ambiance. It’s not a quick lunch situation or a budget friendly stop, it’s more of a “we’re in Hawaii, let’s actually FEEL like we’re in Hawaii” kind of experience. Whether you’re on a honeymoon, celebrating something special, or just want one evening that feels a little elevated, House Without a Key delivers. It’s right on the water in Waikiki so it’s incredibly convenient if you’re staying anywhere in the area, and it’s close enough to walk from most hotels along the main strip.

The Vibe

What I love most is that this place genuinely feels like old Hawaii. Classy and sophisticated but still totally laid back the way only Hawaii can pull off. You step off the Waikiki sidewalk (which can feel a little overwhelming with all the tourists and shops and noise) and suddenly you’re in this serene, breezy, oceanfront setting with a kiawe tree strung with lights overhead. It feels like it’s miles away from all of that chaos even though it’s literally steps from Kalakaua Avenue.

What to Know Before You Go

There are two ways to experience it. You can make a reservation for a proper table with the full dinner menu (HIGHLY recommend doing this if you want a guaranteed spot for sunset). OR you can try your luck with the first-come, first-serve outdoor chairs and small tables, which serve drinks and a smaller menu. Good news though…they’ll often let you order off the full menu even when you’re sitting in those spots, so it works out pretty well either way. Just get there early if you’re going the walk-in route.

What to Order

Their mai tais are seriously so good and honestly a must order. And if you have any room at all for dessert, the coconut cake is legendary. Don’t skip it.

One More Thing…

The entertainment situation can vary a bit. Depending on who’s performing, some nights it’s completely packed with a long wait and some nights you can walk up pretty easily. One night we happened to be there when Miss Hawaii herself was the hula dancer…so yeah, you really never know what you’re going to get. But it’s always worth it.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.

It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
