This Hawaii Resort Has a Secret Lanai with the Best Views on Maui
I’ve always thought the Westin Maui was a big, busy family-heavy resort on bustling Ka’anapali Beach. Nice…convenient…but not exactly special.
But that was before I stayed in the new, luxury Hōkūpaʻa Tower.
And suddenly, it felt like there was a hidden layer to the resort…a private lanai, elevated views, included food throughout the day…and it completely changed the experience.
To the point where it’s now my favorite place to stay on Ka’anapali Beach.
Staying at the Westin Maui
The Westin Maui Resort & Spa is located in Kaanapali on Maui’s west side, right along one of the island’s most popular beaches.
This is a large, full-scale resort. Multiple towers, multiple pools, tons of guests…it’s lively, active, and definitely leans into that classic “Hawaii vacation” energy.
It’s also right next to Whalers Village, which means you’ve got immediate access to shops, restaurants, and beachfront walking paths. Super convenient, but also part of why the area feels busy.
The resort has gone through significant updates in recent years, including the addition of the Hōkūpaʻa Luxury Tower…a more elevated experience within the larger property.
That’s where things get interesting.
Things I Love About the Westin (Especially the Hōkūpaʻa Tower)
1. The “Secret” Lanai Is the Game Changer
This is the reason to consider staying here.
If you’re in the Hōkūpaʻa Tower, you get access to a private lanai space that overlooks the ocean…and it’s honestly one of my favorite spots at the entire resort.
It’s shaded, comfortable, and just far enough removed from the main pool chaos that you can actually relax.
I found myself coming here during the hottest part of the day or when a quick rain shower rolled through. It’s the perfect in-between space…not your room, not the pool, just somewhere to hang out and take in the view.
And the views? Really, really good.
2. The Food Offerings Add Real Value
This was something I didn’t fully appreciate until I experienced it.
In the mornings, there’s a full breakfast buffet available in the lanai area. And in the evenings, they offer pupus (Hawaiian-style appetizers) and snacks.
We didn’t make it back in time to fully take advantage of the evening spread, but even just the breakfast alone made a difference.
It takes the pressure off planning meals and adds a level of convenience that actually feels valuable…not just a “nice perk.”
3. The Rooms Are a Big Step Up
The room I stayed in was really well done.
Clean, modern, comfortable…it felt like a proper upgrade from your standard mid-range resort room. Not ultra-luxury, but definitely elevated.
And importantly, it felt like a place I actually wanted to come back to at the end of the day.
4. The Adults-Only Pool Is a Solid Escape
For a big resort like this, having a good adults-only pool is key…and they delivered.
It’s not over-the-top luxurious, but it’s calm, well-maintained, and noticeably more relaxed than the main pool areas.
If you’re trying to carve out a quieter experience within a busy property, this is where you’ll end up.
5. The Location Is Incredibly Convenient
Being right next to Whalers Village is a huge plus.
You can walk to restaurants, grab coffee, browse shops…it’s all right there. No driving, no planning, no effort.
And honestly, I don’t mind the busy energy. If anything, it makes things feel more lively and accessible.
If you like certain aspects of Waikiki…that walkable, everything-at-your-fingertips vibe…this is probably the closest you’ll get on Maui.
6. Ulu Kitchen Is a Win
Chef Peter Merriman (of Monkeypod fame) has a restaurant here called Ulu Kitchen, and it’s definitely worth checking out.
You can get the famous Monkeypod Mai Tai here…but with arguably better views than the original location next door.
It’s one of those easy wins: good food, great setting, no need to leave the property.
7. Great Beach + Easy Access to Black Rock
The beach here is really solid.
Soft sand, swimmable water, and you’re not far from Black Rock, which is one of the better snorkeling spots in the area.
It’s an easy walk, and it gives you a bit more variety if you want to explore beyond just lounging.
8. The Little Things (That Actually Matter)
There’s a Starbucks on site (which, let’s be honest, is convenient), plus a grab-and-go spot for quick bites.
And one unexpected highlight? The boutique called Ke Kai.
It doesn’t get talked about enough, but they had really great pieces…brands and styles I don’t usually see in resort shops. I ended up spending way more time in there than I planned.
Things That Could Be Better
1. It’s Still a Big, Bustling Resort
No matter how much they elevate parts of the experience, this is still a large, busy hotel.
Crowds, noise, lots of movement…it’s not a quiet, tucked-away escape.
If you’re looking for something serene and secluded, this might feel overwhelming.
2. It’s Not Truly “Luxury”
The Hōkūpaʻa Tower is clearly trying to compete with the luxury resorts in Wailea…and it does a good job in certain areas.
But overall, it’s not quite at that level.
Service, ambiance, and overall feel still lean more toward a high-end mid-range resort rather than true luxury.
3. The Value Depends on Pricing
This is one of those properties where the value really depends on what you’re paying.
If you get a good rate…especially with lanai access…it’s a strong option.
If prices creep too close to luxury resort territory, it becomes harder to justify.
4. Not the Most Unique Experience
While the lanai and tower experience stand out, the resort as a whole doesn’t feel particularly unique.
It’s well done…but it doesn’t have that one-of-a-kind identity that some other Maui properties have.
Overall
The Westin Maui…specifically the Hōkūpaʻa Tower…is one of those places that surprised me.
It takes a big, busy, mid-range resort and adds just enough elevated touches to make it feel like something more.
You should stay here if:
- You want a lively, convenient resort with lots to do
- You like being able to walk to shops and restaurants
- You’re interested in the Hōkūpaʻa Tower experience (especially the lanai access)
- You want a balance between value and a slightly elevated stay
- You enjoy that Waikiki-style energy…but on Maui
- You want a quiet, secluded, or boutique experience
- You’re looking for true luxury comparable to Wailea resorts
- You don’t want to deal with crowds or a busy atmosphere
- You’re not planning to take advantage of the lanai perks
