This Restaurant Has the Dreamiest Views in Hawaii (& It’s Off the Beaten Tourist Path)

Okay, I’m just going to come right out and say it…I think the view from Haleiwa Joe’s on Oahu might be the most beautiful setting I’ve ever eaten at in Hawaii. And I’ve eaten at A LOT of places in Hawaii.

We’re talking lush tropical gardens, koi ponds, towering mountains draped in clouds… it’s almost too pretty to be real.

And the craziest part is…most tourists have no idea it exists.

The Haiku Gardens location in Kaneohe (not to be confused with the original Haleiwa Joe’s on the north shore) sits on the grounds of the historic Haiku Gardens property on the windward side of Oahu. This is a place that’s been around since the 1950s and it has all the character and charm to prove it.

The restaurant itself is a classic Hawaiian seafood and steak house with a solid menu of pupus, fresh fish, and cocktails…but honestly? The setting is the star of the show here.

Who This Restaurant Is Perfect For…

If you’re staying on the windward side of Oahu or planning a day trip out that way (maybe you’re driving up the Pali Highway or visiting Kualoa Ranch), this is a GREATdinner stop.

It’s definitely not in the thick of Waikiki or any major resort area, which is kind of the whole point. This is where locals go to celebrate anniversaries and special occasions, and honestly, it feels that way. There’s something about the atmosphere that just makes you want to slow down and linger.

It’s also PERFECT for sunset dinner vibes. Sitting outside as the golden hour hits those Ko’olau Mountains behind the koi ponds? Absolutely dreamy. I’d say this is more of a “nice dinner out” kind of spot than a casual stop, but it’s not stuffy or overly formal either. Come in your nice vacation clothes, order a cocktail, and soak it all in.

If you’re a Hawaii first-timer who wants to get off the beaten tourist path and actually see a part of Oahu that feels more real and lush and green than anything you’ll find around Waikiki, this is a really good excuse to make the drive.

Extra Details

Price-wise, expect to spend somewhere in the $$$-ish range…it’s not a budget spot, but it’s also not going to require a second mortgage. Entrees generally run in the $25-50 range for dinner. You’re definitely paying a little bit of a premium for that incredible setting, but I think it’s worth it.

For food, the fresh catch of the day is always a safe bet, and the calamari and crab cakes are go-to pupus. The cocktails are solid and the mai tais are exactly what you want when you’re staring out at a tropical garden in Hawaii. Don’t skip dessert either…the macadamia nut ice cream is a crowd-pleaser every time.

The ONLY draw back about dinner here is that they don’t take reservations. When they open at 4:30, there’s a line of people waiting for the first seating and if you show up after that, you’re probably in for a wait.

A pro tip: The bar area (and it has quite a few tables) is first come, first serve and it’s usually a lot easier to snag a table here. They don’t serve the full dinner menu here but they have a fairly hearty pupus menu (you could definitely make a meal out of it).

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.

It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
