This Affordable Waikiki Stay Has the Most Charming Pool & Tiki Bar
If you’ve spent any time scrolling Instagram looking at Waikiki hotels, you’ve probably seen it.
The cute umbrellas. The turquoise pool. The swings at the tiki bar.
I finally stayed at White Sands Hotel, and I completely understand why it shows up all over social media. The pool area alone feels like a retro postcard come to life.
But here’s the honest version: while the courtyard and bar absolutely live up to the hype, the rooms? Not quite the same story.
So if you’re considering White Sands because of that adorable pool and its affordable price tag, let me walk you through what it’s really like to stay here…the charm, the quirks, and the stuff you should know before booking.
Staying at White Sands
White Sands Hotel is located just off Kuhio Avenue in central Waikiki. It’s not beachfront…you’re about a 5–10 minute walk to the sand…but you’re right in the middle of everything. Restaurants, shopping, nightlife, beach access…it’s all close.
The hotel itself is a smaller, retro-style property built around a central courtyard pool. It’s definitely not a mega resort. There are no sprawling grounds, no towering wings, no luxury towers. It’s intimate and very much about atmosphere.
What it’s best known for? The pool and the tiki bar.
The courtyard is basically the heart of the property…colorful umbrellas, tropical plants, cozy seating, and that famous bar with literal swings instead of stools. It feels like a hidden little oasis in the middle of busy Waikiki.
It has a very intentional mid-century, vintage Hawaiiana vibe. Playful. Instagrammable. A little cheeky.
And that’s really the brand.
Things I Love About White Sands
Okay, let’s talk about why this place gets so much love.
1. The Pool Area Is Genuinely Adorable
I don’t throw around the word “charming” lightly, but this courtyard earns it.
The umbrellas are fun and perfectly placed. The pool is framed by palms and retro details. There are cozy corners everywhere.
You’d honestly be hard pressed to find a more aesthetically pleasing pool area in Waikiki at this price point.
It’s small, yes. But it has personality.
2. The Tiki Bar Swings
The swings at the bar? Such a fun touch.
Instead of bar stools, you’re literally swinging while sipping a drink. It’s playful without feeling gimmicky.
There’s often a live band playing in the evenings, and the whole courtyard comes alive. It feels social and energetic…more like a neighborhood hangout than a traditional hotel bar.
If you like hotels with character and built-in atmosphere, this is it.
3. The Retro Vibe
White Sands fully leans into its retro identity.
From the signage to the decor to the courtyard lighting at night, it feels cohesive. It’s not pretending to be luxury. It’s not pretending to be modern. It knows exactly what it is.
And honestly? I respect that.
It feels like a place with a point of view instead of a generic chain.
4. It’s Affordable
This is a big one.
Waikiki pricing can get wild fast…especially if you’re trying to stay somewhere cute and central.
White Sands is often significantly cheaper than the big beachfront resorts while still offering style and location.
If you’re prioritizing vibe and value over luxury, this makes a lot of sense.
5. It’s Social
The courtyard setup naturally encourages interaction. Whether you’re at the pool during the day or hanging at the bar at night, there’s a lively energy.
It feels younger and more relaxed than many of the larger hotels.
If you’re traveling with friends or you like a bit of buzz in the evenings, this is a plus.
Things That Could Be Better About White Sands
1. The Rooms Felt Tired
This is where I was a little disappointed.
The rooms photograph beautifully…bright colors, retro touches, good angles. But in person, they felt a bit worn.
The carpet gave me the ick (I’m just being honest). The finishes felt older than I expected. The bathroom was functional but definitely on the lower end compared to other Waikiki stays in a similar price range.
It wasn’t terrible. But it didn’t feel “nice.” It felt like the renovation upgraded the rooms about 50% and leaned into style and personality instead of doing a 100% gut job.
If you’re someone who cares more about room quality than pool aesthetics, this might matter to you.
2. Soundproofing Is Minimal
This is an older hotel…and you can tell.
There’s not much soundproofing. Between hallway noise and the live band at the tiki bar most nights, it can get loud.
I always travel with a white noise machine (highly recommend), and I was very glad I had it here.
If you’re a light sleeper, this is something to seriously consider.
3. No Resort Amenities
There’s no spa. No gym to speak of. No beach service. No massive pool deck.
It’s very much a boutique courtyard hotel.
If you want the full-service resort experience, this isn’t it.
4. Rooms Are Pretty Basic
Beyond feeling a little tired, the rooms are just… basic.
They’re fine for sleeping and showering. But they’re not somewhere you’ll necessarily want to hang out for hours.
For me, that’s okay…I’m usually out exploring. But if you plan to spend a lot of time in your room, it might not wow you.
Overall
White Sands Hotel is a vibe-forward, budget-friendly stay in central Waikiki with one of the cutest courtyard setups in the area.
The pool and tiki bar are absolutely the star of the show. The energy is fun. The design is cohesive. The location is convenient.
But the rooms don’t quite match the magic of the common spaces.
You should stay here if:
- You care about aesthetic and atmosphere
- You want a social, lively vibe
- You’re traveling with friends
- You’re on a budget but don’t want something boring
- You don’t mind older-room quirks
You might consider staying elsewhere if:
- You’re a light sleeper
- You want modern, polished rooms
- You’re looking for luxury-level comfort
- You need resort-style amenities

For me? I’m glad I stayed.
Would I book it for a romantic, quiet anniversary trip? Probably not.
Would I stay here for a fun girls’ trip or a short Waikiki getaway where I plan to be out most of the day and back for sunset drinks? Absolutely.
White Sands feels like a cool little hangout spot that happens to have rooms upstairs. And if that’s the kind of energy you’re looking for…charming pool, tiki swings, affordable price tag…it totally delivers.
