The Best Marriott Points Redemption in Maui Nobody Is Talking About

Okay, so if you’re a Marriott points person and you’ve been trying to figure out how to make your points work harder in Maui…I’ve got something for you.

Here’s the thing about Wailea: it’s home to some of the most stunning (and expensive) resorts in all of Hawaii. The Four Seasons, the Andaz, the Grand Wailea…the Wailea Beach Resort Marriott…these places are INCREDIBLE, and also $800, $900, $1,200+ a night. So unless you’ve got a serious stash of points or a truly unlimited budget, actually staying in Wailea can feel a little out of reach.

But there’s a property sitting right there in the mix that almost nobody talks about in the points conversation, and I think it’s one of the best-kept secrets for Marriott loyalists visiting Maui.

Enter: the AC Hotel Wailea.

Staying at the AC Hotel Wailea

The AC Hotel Wailea is a new construction hotel in the heart of Wailea on Maui’s sunny south shore. It’s part of Marriott’s AC Hotels brand, which is known for a sleek, European-inspired aesthetic…clean lines, modern design, nothing fussy. The property is set back up the hill a bit from the oceanfront resorts, which is actually a big part of why the points math works out so well here (more on that in a second).

It’s not a massive resort with a dozen restaurants and a lazy river. It’s more of a stylish, well-appointed hotel that puts you squarely in Wailea without the full-resort price tag. And for a certain kind of traveler, that’s EXACTLY what they’re looking for.

Things I Love About the AC Hotel Wailea

It’s NEW and it shows. Everything here is fresh and clean and nice. No worn carpet, no dated bathrooms, no “this used to be really great” energy. The rooms are nice, clean, and modern.  When you’re spending points (or cash) on a hotel, it matters that the place actually feels worth it.

The ocean views are surprisingly good. For a property that isn’t sitting directly on the water, the views from the pool and many of the rooms are actually pretty great. Yes, you’ll also see the parking lot if you look straight down…but look out toward the horizon and it’s the Pacific Ocean and the West Maui Mountains in all their glory. Nobody’s complaining about that.

The points redemption is DECENT. Here’s the headline. I’ve been able to book this property for 35,000 points using a free night certificate, which is just…an incredible deal for Wailea. When the cash rate at neighboring oceanfront resorts can hit $1,000+ per night, snagging a night in Wailea for a free night cert feels like you found a cheat code. The key is flexibility. You’ll need to watch the calendar closely and be willing to move your dates around to find availability at the lower redemption rate, but if you can swing it, this is one of the best point values on Maui full stop. For full context…I usually find the best rates (and point redemptions) in late August through September. But you don’t usually find great prices far in advance. So flexibility (and being able to book closer to your travel dates is essential).

The location is genuinely great. This is the part that surprises people. Being “back up the hill” from the beachfront resorts sounds like a downgrade, but in practice it means you’re walkable to basically everything that makes Wailea special: beaches, other resort pools (if you’re doing the day pass thing), the Shops at Wailea, tons of great restaurants. If your plan is to be OUT most of the day anyway…exploring, at the beach, eating your way around Maui…and you just need a really nice, comfortable home base to come back to, the AC Hotel checks every box.

Side Note: If you’re looking for a rental car for your trip, I LOVE Discount Hawaii Car Rentals. They’re seriously the only company I ever use. They’ll give you the very best prices, you don’t have to reserve with a credit card or pay until you show up, you can cancel and re-book anytime if you find a better rate, and they usually have a special that adds additional drivers for no fee. It’s a no brainer. Click here to check rates for your trip.

It’s a smart choice if Wailea is the goal but the oceanfront price tag isn’t. Look, I get it. Not everyone can or wants to drop $1,200 a night on a resort, even in Hawaii. The AC Hotel gives you the Wailea zip code and access to everything the resort bubble has to offer at a fraction of the price. That’s a good value proposition even if you’re paying cash.

Things That Could Be Better

They charge for parking. And honestly? This is my biggest gripe. Yes, parking fees are guaranteed at all of the big resorts, but it just feels a little unnecessary here. The oceanfront resorts that charge for parking are dealing with actual space constraints…they’re crammed onto a tiny sliver of beach with hundreds of rooms. The AC Hotel is up the hill with more room to work with. Charging guests for parking when you’re already not a full-service beachfront resort just feels like a nickel-and-diming move I could do without.

It’s not a full-service resort. To be clear, this isn’t really a criticism so much as a reality check. If you’re expecting the grand resort experience with multiple pools, a spa, beach attendants, and restaurants on-site, this isn’t that. It’s a nice hotel, not a destination resort. That’s totally fine if you know what you’re signing up for, but worth flagging if you’re envisioning a never-leave-the-property kind of trip.

You’re not on the beach. Again…not a secret, but worth saying plainly. The beach is walkable (it feels more walkable when you’re going down the hill), but it’s not right there. If waking up and walking straight to the sand is the dream, you’ll want to look at the oceanfront properties.

So Who Should Stay Here?

You should ABSOLUTELY stay at the AC Hotel Wailea if…you’re a Marriott points collector who wants to stretch your redemption in one of the most expensive resort areas in Hawaii, you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring and just need a really nice place to sleep and hang by the pool, or you want the Wailea experience without the Wailea oceanfront price tag.

You might consider staying somewhere else if…the full resort experience is a big part of your vacation (in that case, look at the Wailea Beach Resort.

But if you’re a points person? Keep an eye on that calendar, be patient with availability, and snag this one when you can. It’s a GREAT redemption that way too many people are sleeping on.

I’ve made it my job for the last 10 years to explore Maui.

And after hundreds of beach days, rainforest hikes, snorkeling trips, and reconnaissance missions to find the best hotels… and mai tais… I put everything I know into one place.

This is my Maui Digital Map — hundreds of my favorite spots. Beaches, snorkeling spots, hikes, farm tours, scenic drives, places to eat.

Yes, I share hidden spots I don’t talk about so much on social media…but also—tourist doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Popular places are popular for a reason.

So I break down what’s worth it, what’s not, where to spend your money, where to save it, and how to avoid crowds at some of Maui’s most popular (and best) places so you actually enjoy your time.

I’m also sharing all of my travel guides on when to go, where to stay, detailed hotel reviews…
plus dozens of itinerary options based on where you’re staying and what you love to do.

It’s everything you need to see the best of Maui and actually relax. A Vacation in a box…all YOU need to do is pack your suitcase.
