Want the Best Beach Photos on Maui? This Is the Spot.
If you want STUNNING, frame-worthy, how-is-this-real beach photos on Maui… I’m going to let you in on something. It’s not Wailea Beach. It’s not Ka’anapali. It’s a little known spot right by the airport called Kanaha Beach Park and I think it might be the most photogenic beach on the entire island.
I’ll explain why in a second, but first let me just say that Kanaha is one of those places that flies almost completely under the tourist radar and I find it kind of wild. Most visitors never even hear about it, let alone actually go.
Kanaha Beach Park
Kanaha Beach Park sits on the north shore of Maui near Kahului, which is where the main airport is. And here’s the thing that keeps a lot of people away… you actually have to drive through the airport to get back here. I know that sounds weird, and it is a little weird, but don’t let it put you off. Once you get there you’ll immediately understand why it’s worth the slightly odd approach. There’s plenty of parking, the beach is long and open, and it feels like a world away from the resort areas on the south and west sides of the island.
It’s worth knowing upfront that Kanaha is not really a swimming beach. The conditions here are better suited for windsurfing and kiteboarding, and on any given day you’ll see locals out on the water doing exactly that. The crowd tends to be a mix of windsurfers, local families, and the occasional visitor who stumbled onto something really good. It has a very un-touristy, everyday Maui energy that I personally love.
Why You’ll Love This
Here’s why Kanaha deserves a spot on your Maui itinerary even if you never set foot in the water…
THE PHOTOS. I mean it when I say this is the most photogenic beach on Maui for a specific reason that most people don’t think about… the backdrop. Most beaches on Maui give you ocean views in every direction, which is beautiful, but Kanaha gives you something different. Standing on the beach here you get a jaw-dropping view of the West Maui Mountains rising up behind the water and the trees and it is SO pretty. The combination of the bright white sand, the incredibly blue water on the north shore, and those mountains in the background creates a picture that looks almost too good to be real. If I were planning a couples shoot or family photos on Maui, this is where I would come. No contest.
THE SAND AND WATER. The sand here is notably white and the water has that vivid blue color that makes you want to just stand there and stare at it. Even compared to other beautiful beaches on Maui, the north shore color palette feels a little extra.
THE TURTLES. On calmer days when the waves aren’t too big, there are often sea turtles hanging around near the shore. It’s not guaranteed obviously, but the chances of a turtle sighting here are pretty good and it’s always a highlight.
THE MORNING WALK. The beach at Kanaha is long and it makes for one of the best morning walks on Maui. Get here early, walk the beach with a coffee, watch the windsurfers set up, catch the light on the mountains. It’s a really peaceful way to start a day.
THE LACK OF CROWDS. Because of the location and the whole driving-through-the-airport situation, Kanaha just doesn’t get the tourist traffic that other Maui beaches do. You get all of this beauty without fighting for a patch of sand or navigating a packed parking lot, which on Maui is honestly a small miracle.
