The Most Romantic Dinner Spot on Maui Might Be This Spot on the Water in Lahaina

There are a few restaurants on Maui that everybody talks about. Mama’s Fish House. Merriman’s. And look, they deserve the hype. But I want to talk about a place that honestly doesn’t get nearly enough credit… Mala Ocean Tavern.
Mala is a little restaurant right on the water on Front Street in Lahaina (and yes, it’s in a pocket of restaurants that thankfully wasn’t affected by the fires). The vibe is best described as a cozy little wooden shack on the ocean, which I mean in the absolute best way possible. It’s intimate and unpretentious and the whole farm-to-table, fresh ingredient approach to the food and drinks just makes everything feel a little special.
Who This Is Perfect For…
Okay so if you’re planning a romantic dinner on Maui, this is IT. I would put it up against any restaurant on the island for a date night kind of vibe. The setting alone does a lot of the heavy lifting… sitting right on the water in Lahaina as the sun goes down is pretty hard to beat. But it’s also just a great spot if you’re celebrating anything, treating yourself to a nicer dinner, or you just want somewhere that feels a little more special than your average night out. It’s not stuffy at all, but it’s definitely a step up from casual.
Also worth mentioning… this is a GREAT brunch spot too. So if a nice dinner doesn’t fit your schedule, file it away for a lazy late morning instead.
A Few Details Before You Go
One thing to know before you show up: they seat the restaurant from front to back, which means if you want a table out on the lanai (and trust me, you want a table out on the lanai), make a reservation the moment they open for dinner. That outdoor seating right over the water is the whole experience and it books up fast.
What to Order
The ahi bruschetta is a non-negotiable starter. For a main, I love the pappardelle pesto pasta. And on the drinks front, get the “Rosemary Me.”
Price-wise, it’s in that mid-to-upper range you’d expect for a dinner spot like this on Maui… not quite the investment that Mama’s is, but this isn’t a burger-and-a-beer situation either. Plan accordingly and it feels completely worth it.
Mala Ocean Tavern may not get the hype that places like Mama’s Fish House gets and it’s a little under the radar but I kind of love that about it ; )
